We now have eight or so club members who have volunteered to help with the mowing at Green Castle. Not everyone is aware that part of the reason it is so economical to be a member of Green Castle Aero Club is that nearly all labor that does not have to be done by a certified airplane mechanic is done by club volunteers. Think about how much money is spent at even a small municipal airport for maintaining runways and structures and paying salaries and you will realize what it might cost to belong to Green Castle if we were not an all-volunteer outfit.
Keeping the grass cut is not just for looks. A thousand feet of our runway is grass. It takes about six hours to get everything mowed (if all the mowers are running) and the grass needs to be mowed nearly every week. It goes faster with two people mowing, as we had today.
Let’s all thank Dave and Mark for getting the season off to a great start. Neither of them had previously run the machine they were operating, but it only took them a few minutes to learn.
Think about volunteering for this or one of the other tasks that need done at Green Castle this summer.
